Unlocking the Power of Communication: Lessons from the ACS Emerging Professional Event
On July 16, 2025, I had the privilege of attending my first in-person professional event hosted by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) – the NSW Emerging Professional Event: "Your Communication Toolkit – Speak Clearly, Listen Actively, and Understand Deeply". Held at Barangaroo Avenue, Sydney, this session turned out to be more than just a workshop – it was a turning point in my professional journey.
The event brought together over 60 enthusiastic emerging professionals, all eager to refine their communication skills and build authentic professional connections. Facilitated by Noah Pincini (NSW EPC Member), the evening started with a warm welcome before transitioning into a powerful keynote by Paul Wallbank (ACS Media & Communications Manager), supported by Ida Victoria Konradsen (NSW EPC Member).
Key Insights from the Speakers
- The Three C’s: Communication must be Concise, Clear, and Consistent.
- Breakdowns are about perception, not intention: Delivery and medium matter.
- Adaptability: Tailor communication style to your audience and platform.
- Mastering the 5W1H: Who, What, When, Where, Why & How – the fundamentals of clarity.
- Understanding Diversity: Communicate effectively across multigenerational and multicultural teams.
- Confidence is built through practice: Repetition leads to mastery.
Interactive Workshops
Three interactive sessions led by Anansha Kc, Vishesh Kalsi, and Hibah J. offered hands-on experience in applying the theories shared during the keynote. These breakout sessions included:
- Active Talking & Listening: Elevator pitch scenarios and creative articulation.
- Uncomfortable Conversations: Navigating conflict resolution and deadline delays.
- Intention vs. Impact: Group discussions on communicating via email, phone, or video call.
Personal Reflection
This event marked a key milestone for me. As my very first ACS event and real-world networking opportunity, it instilled a newfound confidence that has carried into every conversation and connection since. What began as a curiosity to explore professional communication evolved into a meaningful journey of self-assurance, engagement, and growth. I left not only with better communication tools, but with a mindset ready to step forward into the industry with purpose.
I’ve documented the experience on LinkedIn as well. You can watch the short recap below:
A big thank you to the ACS NSW Emerging Professional Committee and all the speakers who made this event possible. This was just the beginning, and I'm excited for what lies ahead.
